My dad and I on a Keys lobstering trip many years ago.
Sadly, my father Daniel Bloomfield passed away in early September.
We miss him dearly, but I find solace in the fact that he got to experience more of this planet than most ever dream of, and his personality itself was larger than life. I wrote this poem which recalls some of my most vivid memories of him.
Dan was also known for making people happy, especially when he threw his famous crawfish boils —something he picked up when we lived in Louisiana for a couple of years.
So, on November 14, 2015, we’re going to throw a big crawfish boil in his honor!
All Are Welcome!
My dad’s motto was always “the more the merrier.” Kids are welcome, too, and we’ll have plenty for them to do.
There will also be a lot of other food including shrimp, crabs, veggies, BBQ and more. Everyone is welcome to bring a dish, too. There will be beer on tap, but bring any other libations you might want.
Live music will be provided by the band that my dad loved so much: Brevard County’s own ROUGH EDGES! The party starts at 1 PM and will be at my house in Merritt Island, FL, so come by car or boat. After you RSVP below, I will email you my address.
WHEN: November 14, 2015 at 1 PM
WHERE: Merritt Island, FL

I worked with Dan for many years and had many great times at his parties as well as when he showed me how to drive a boat with out tipping over (long story) that we all remember fondly. Great times. Dan was loved and will be missed. What a great way of celebrating his life.

Mr Dan was the man who introduced me to Bahama Life. From prepping his multiple boats for trips to free diving in 10,000 ft of water to free a stuck rudder, it was always an adventure. As Sean and I have gotten older we have somewhatgrown apart with growing families and responsibilities however I will always cherish the adventures we had and trips we took with his father! Looking forward to sharing some of those memories with Sean and his family this Saturday. Rest easy Mr Dan and prayers for your family!

As I read through the post, I see a common binding agent which has intertwined many of our lives together, the sea. I was extremely fortunate many years ago to take part in my first mini lobster season, which just so happened to be aboard one of Dan’s boats. The week before would be my first chance to meet Dan, and as we all know, I was welcomed into not only his home, but into his life with open arms. As far as I remember, he only asked for a few things those two weekends, work on the boat, which may or may not include bilge diving and prop scrapping, catch lobsters, and last and by far the easiest, do not let Mister out of the house at night. I will say this, I worked on the boat, I caught some bugs, and yes Mister “escaped” from the house under my watch. Not sure I can take all the credit for that one, but we will leave that for another day. The one thing I realized shortly after that, and most likely that same weekend, is that after Mister “escaping” and what now I realize was very little work on the boat, was Dan’s generosity. He made sure we had all that we needed and more, and in the end, a thank you was enough. A group of us this past July just celebrated our 11th year of diving mini lobster season together, and as I sit here and write this, I realize again that I owe him a thank you. This annual trip holds a special place in our lives and in my heart, which for me started on his boat and in his house. Wow, my first experiences with Dan Bloomfield came back in the mid 1990's while working with Sean at Saltwater Concepts when Dan had the live aboard trawler,I can't remember the name...(Sean?) I do remember hearing that Dan & Sean were going to Walkers Cay, at the time that place seemed like another world, it was like a dream destination for me because my goal was to be a flats fishing guide, Walkers Cay Chronicles was my favorite fishing show and I couldn't believe Dan & Sean were actually taking the trawler & whaler there, I think I lent them my Garmin hand held GPS. this is just one memory of Dan that sparked my imagination and inspired me, you see Dan seemed a lot like me, an adult but with a childlike attitude with a sense of adventure, later I remember hearing stories of his travels to New Zealand and Bora Bora. of coarse we all remember Dan for his funny laugh and always making jokes! I too was part of several Lobster mini season dives down in Palm City, with Dave Wilcox, his son, I think Adam? Dan & Sean and FireBall (AKA Robert Beadell) LOL! I also remember going along with Dan to bring back a Rampage he bought, I think it was called Lil Stormy but later re named The Rogue Wave, this was another inspiring experience for me as I didn't have much off shore experience. Dan was always a humble gracious and generous host, full of Aloha Spirit. In 2003 I remember staying with him down in Palm City when I had no where else to go after leaving a recovery halfway house, that meant so much to me having Dan treat me like family, I also remember that wild crazy cat Mister LOL! Dan meant a lot to me, and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate his life than a crawfish boil with a bunch of his friends and family. I’ll never forget the first time I saw a kiddie pool full of mud bugs crawling around at one of his famous parties. I knew right away I was going to like the guy. Speaking of bugs…..many years ago Dan provided me with my first opportunity to go lobster diving down in Stuart. It’s a memory I’ve always cherished, and I’ll never forget Dan and Sean for making it happen. Over the years the genesis of that trip has transformed into an annual event that is still enjoyed by a large group of friends. Not long after this inaugural trip is when Dan introduced me to his concept of quid pro quo. He’s was up for taking out the boat and lobstering if I was game for a little prop and bottom scraping. Dan was very generous and I always received more than I gave, but in the back of my mind I always wondered what I was signing myself up for. But that was Dan. That’s how he operated, and that’s how our relationship endured. I laughed about the little things back then, just as I laugh about them now. Dan was a champion for my career before I even had a career. His persistence enabled me to get my foot through the door with Lockheed Martin where I met my wife Elisabeth. Without Dan I wouldn’t be where I am today, and I never would have met Elisabeth. When I add it all up, no amount of prop scraping or lawn mowing could compare to what he did for me. So, yes….I’ll gladly attend this party and celebrate... Read more

Dan and I worked side by side for almost 15 years. We became good friends and had many common interests, fishing an the Miami Dolphins the most everyone's familar with. We would often have a beer together after work and cry about the fins last game or plot the next fishing trip. By far though the annual "Mudbug Party" was the most memorable. We would start planning early for the Memorial day extravaganza for all our coworkers, family and friends. They were great times. Dan touched many lives and I'm sure he will be remembered as a careing person that always wanted to share good times. Tight lines my friend! You are missed deeply.
